I can count on one hand how many campaign commercials that I have ever seen that featured a Black woman. The law of the land on commercials (of any type) seems to be if they “have to” cast someone Black (even in commercials with products primarily marketed towards women), choose an “articulate” or funny Black male, not female. Because this is usually the case, I’ve actually started keeping track of commercials that I have seen that: 1) features any Black women or girls at all, and 2) features them in a way that is NOT stereotypical or marginalizing. (I will share those videos [if I can find them online as these are commercials so my first point of contact is through television] on Gradient Lair from time to time.) This campaign commercial is for the Obama campaign, and I actually found out about it through a tweet from Questo of The Roots. I usually am not moved (but in fact annoyed) by campaign commercials, in general, from any candidate, on any side, from local to national…but this one really did touch me.
