The GOP is interested in restricting voting. We know that they did not like the election results in 2008, but it was not just the result (President Obama), it was the unprecedented turnout.
In 2008, about 65% of Blacks went to the polls, nearly matching the 66% voting rate for whites. Black women had the highest rates of participation among all voters at 69%. Blacks, meanwhile, had their sharpest increase in voter participation in more than a decade, with 15.9 million casting ballots to make up 12.1% of the electorate. Among voters 18-29, Blacks had the strongest participation rate in last November’s election at 58%, compared with 51% overall in that age group. - USA Today
More on the demographic breakdown of the 2008 Elections
Today, Black people vote for and identify with Democrats more than Republicans (though this was not always the case due to what the actual parties stood for when juxtaposed to their labels changing over time. More on this). The boring and predictable scapegoat that “Black people voted for Obama only because of his race” (and some won’t even allow him to be identified as “Black”), not party affiliation, is of course a lie.
Obama received 95% of the votes cast by Black people in 2008. Kerry received 88% of the votes cast by Black people in 2004. Gore received 90% of the votes cast by Black people in 2000. Clinton received 83% of the votes cast by Black people in 1992 and 84% in 1996. Dukakis received 89% of the votes cast by Black people in 1988. Mondale received 91% of the votes cast by Black people in 1984. Carter received 83% of the votes cast by Black people in 1980 and 83% in 1976.
Clearly, well over 3 out of 4 Black people vote Democratic. I am not saying that we should or should not vote this way. I am not even saying everyone “has to” vote or “shut up.” Some people choose not to vote for a variety of reasons, and that’s a different post altogether. But, that is their choice. It should not be the right of others to restrict or remove this right from us. We’ve already been down this road before.
Believe me, I am not one afraid to compliment or critique President Obama.
Obama challenges White supremacy domestically w/ fairness/income ideology. He reinforces White supremacy w/ drone warfare/pro-Israel memes.

But this is not about that. This is about people (some who’ve even admitted it) who are pretending that voter fraud is what they are trying to curtail, a virtually non-existent problem, when in fact it is about limiting the rights of Blacks, Hispanics, youth and senior citizens…groups who tend to vote for Democrats.
